Many books and articles have been written on the importance of creating good habits. But let’s face it: “Habits are Habits,” and before we can create “good” ones, we need to know how to identify “bad” ones. This is difficult because many times, habits are unconscious activities that we perform throughout our day. I liken them to being on “auto-pilot.” We don’t even recognize we are doing them most of the time.

For example, I have a jelly-belly dispenser on my dresser. On weekends and holidays, I will pull down on that little lever and dispense about 10 of those delicious little goodies directly into my hand. Most of the time, they are gone before I get out of the bedroom. Sometimes, I wonder if I even tasted them! One “pull” is probably not an issue, but how often do I help myself? I’m not sure, but I know I have to refill the dispenser weekly (which can’t be good).

So your homework assignment, should you accept it, is to write down ALL of your habits this week in a journal or notebook. No judgment and no cheating. We are just looking for a place to start. You don’t have to share it with anyone if you don’t want to, but let’s get a baseline so we know where to begin!
