Before you can set a goal, create a plan, and even start a task, you have to have a dream. Martin Luther King, Jr. understood it when he made that iconic speech “I have a dream.” Having a dream can give your life purpose. Then come the tough decisions: How hard are you willing to work, and how much are you willing to sacrifice to make your dream come true?

Your dream needs to make you happy and bring fulfillment to your life. It doesn’t have to impress anyone else. Some people dream about raising a family and being a great parent (certainly an admirable accomplishment). But any “good parent” or “good husband or wife” will tell you that it isn’t easy! There is a TON of time, energy and self-sacrifice that goes into raising children or being in a committed relationship.

Someone once told me “the most un-selfish thing you will ever do is have a child” and that’s because good parents change the way they live, immediately! Every decision moving forward involves thinking about how that decision or action impacts their child. Now, it’s easy to see that there are a lot of people in the world that do not adhere to this philosophy. But if you look at “good” parents, you will see how much time they spent trying to do right by their children. The majority of good/well-adjusted children are the product of at least one person that sacrificed for that child’s well-being.

So spend some time figuring out what makes you happy. What natural talents do you have that you can enhance to help you reach your dream? Also, keep an open mind. Making dreams become reality is a long and hard process, filled with challenges, failures and disappointments along the way. And sometimes having a dream can change during the actual process. New and exciting opportunities arise that we never even thought about. We can find happiness and fulfillment in a slightly different way than we originally thought.

But once you can envision your dream, we are ready to get started.
